A variant is a version of a lesson written for a specific audience, generated by AI from a master lesson. Tessera ships two kinds:
  • Plain language — the same content, rewritten more simply.
  • Micro-path — at most 15 minutes, essentials only.
Like every other AI output in Tessera, a variant lands as a labeled draft. An author reviews, edits, or keeps it before it’s published.

Staying in sync

Each variant block remembers which master block it came from and what that block looked like when the variant was last synced. When the master lesson changes, the lesson’s variants list shows how many blocks changed, and the Compare page shows exactly what’s different, block by block:
  • In sync with the master — unchanged since the last sync.
  • Master changed — the matching master block was edited since; the variant hasn’t caught up.
  • New in master — a block was added to the master that the variant doesn’t have yet.
  • Removed from master — the variant’s source block no longer exists in the master.
  • Only in variant — content the author added directly to the variant, with no master counterpart.
An author sees the master and variant side by side and chooses, block by block or all at once:
  • Resync — AI rewrites the variant block from the current master, again as a draft.
  • Keep variant — accept the variant as it stands, without rewriting it.

Who gets a variant

A student reading a lesson that has a matching variant is shown that variant automatically: plain language if their profile asks for plain reading, or the micro-path version if their study sessions are 15 minutes or less. The lesson always says why — for example, “Shown in plain language because your profile asks for plain reading” — and links back to “Read the full lesson.” A student can also open the fuller or shorter version directly if one is available, with the same explanation.
